Joan Davis, Teaneck activist, dies

TEANECK – Joan Curello Davis of the township died Tuesday, Aug. 17. She was 74.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has ruled her death a murder with subsequent arson.

Predeceased by her sister Mary Curello Bonadies.

Survivors include five nieces and nephews.

Born in New Haven, Conn., she was a graduate of Albertus Magnus College in that city. She was briefly employed with the U.S. Agency for International Development and was a freelance writer, a local political activist and a concerned citizen of Teaneck.

Councilman Elie Y. Katz, who lived around the corner from Ms. Davis and often drove her to and from council meetings, said, “In my 14 years on Council, Joan missed less then less than a handful of meetings. Teaneck politics was her life. …She was a harmless woman that was passionate about Teaneck and dedicated herself in her style to making sure government was transparent. She commented when she didn’t like something and complimented Council when she was pleased.”

A memorial service was held at the Volk Funeral Home in Teaneck on Thursday, Aug. 26, followed by a community candlelight vigil outside the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Community Scholarship Fund of Teaneck, Attn.: Carol Otis, In Memory of Joan Davis, 1008 Windsor Rd., Teaneck 07666, or Friends of the Library, Attn.: Mike McCue, In Memory of Joan Davis, 840 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck.
