‘Showtune’ by Park Players gets 6 out of 10

The cast of “Showtune”

By Nicole Parente

“Showtune” took the stage from Oct 7-15 at Waterford Towers in Edgewater and it delivered a pretty good performance. It actually was better then I thought it was going to be and I was for the most part impressed with it.

The space where the show was held was small with limited seating. However, it’s a nice little theatre and was perfect for a show with very few cast members. It just seemed uncomfortable for the actors to have to exit and enter the stage from the same side. At some points in the show they used the main entrance of the theatre, but for the most part they exited and entered from stage right. I feel that the space limited this show to where the movement had to be smaller. A musical review should be done in a space that compliments it. Waterford Towers did not compliment “Showtune”.

The cast, I felt, was both strong and weak. There were only 8 cast members, but the blend of the voices made for great harmony. At times, some of the parts were weaker in spots than at other points where the singing was stronger. I think some of the solos could have been better. The group numbers were fantastic. What I also found interesting about the singing was how it connected each scene. It made for a very good story behind it.

The costumes were original and ordinary, with nothing special about them. The men dressed business casual and the women dressed as if they were going to a party, with dresses and skirts. Though there was nothing to get excited about with the costumes, I did like the use of the business casual dress for this type of show.

There was no set design. The type of space being used didn’t allow it. This show could have definitely benefitted from a set. For a musical review there should have been something more then just posters hanging on a wall, and some pieces on the floor. Though I was disappointed with the set, I understand why they couldn’t do more.

One aspect of the show that was very good was sound and lighting. Even though it was in a small space you still had to have Mics on the actors. The sound was very clear and I didn’t hear any feedback coming through the speakers. The lighting was simple, but fit the scenes and songs beautifully. This might have been the strongest part of the show outside of the singing.

“Showtune” gets a six out of ten in my book. It could have been a whole lot better. I know I keep referring to the space, but it took so much away from the potential of what it could have been.  However, Park Players worked with what was there and staged a good show.
