Produce Pete guest at EHMC breakfast
Produce Pete, one of America’s favorite grocers, will be the featured speaker at the Wednesday, Oct. 27 meeting of the Breakfast Club of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
Brunch and a lively conversation about selecting and preparing nutritious, delicious food will be the highlights of the event, “Get Fresh.”
The program will benefit the hospital’s educational outreach to local schools and community groups on combating childhood obesity.
Produce Pete can be seen on Saturday mornings on local television, where he has been a regular commentator for more than 18 years, demystifying the theory and practice of healthful cooking and enjoyable eating.
“Since I was a little kid, when I made the rounds selling fruits and vegetables with my father door-to-door, I’ve had the good fortune of being exposed to fresh food that tastes good and is good for you,” he said. “Sharing what I know is my way of giving back for all the good things that have come my way in life.”
These good things have included his wife, Bette, two children, seven grandchildren and successful careers as a produce grocer and commentator for several media outlets. Pete got his start on TV in 1988 when a producer who was buying an apple at his store in Bergenfield, asked the personable and knowledgeable grocer if he would consider being in a segment on her show. “What’s a segment?” he responded.
After about 20 attempts to get him to go on the air and with his wife’s encouragement, Pete finally decided to give TV a try. “Someone called the house and Bette said, ‘Send a car.’ ” Soon, he was on his way to the studio and the rest is history. A career that has included NBC, ABC, WWOR, NBC Nonstop and other varied opportunities to showcase his talents was launched.
The high-profile grocer will be bringing his down-to-earth wisdom to familiar territory. Now an Oakland resident, Produce Pete was born at Englewood Hospital, as were Bette and their children. “I’m glad to be able to support a hospital that has been there for my family and me for so many years,” he said.
Bob Harris, owner of event sponsor Grain Berry products of The Silver Palate, will also offer insights on eating well. The Grain Berry line includes items rich in antioxidants and fiber. The Cresskill-based company is known for delicious food made of pure and natural ingredients.
The Breakfast Club, an auxiliary of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation, was created by community members in 2010 to raise awareness of the medical expertise of Englewood Hospital through social outreach and events. The growing organization meets on an occasional basis at various locations and welcomes new members. Foundation trustee Susan Silberman, Suellen Freeman, Beth Nadel and Carol Rubin are co-chairpersons of the Breakfast Club Committee.
“Get Fresh” will take place at the Alpine Country Club, 80 Anderson Avenue, Demarest at 10 a.m. on October 27.
The donation is $50. Reservations are requested by October 20. Contact Debbie Reid at debbie.reid@ehmc.com or 201-894-3725 for more information.
