FL girls’ recreation basketball has scored

By Fort Lee Girls’ Recreation Basketball League President Michael Klein

The Fort Lee Girls’ Recreation Basketball League has doubled in participation since 2006. Today there are over 260 girls registered to participate on 22 teams ranging from grades 3 to 8. The league is divided into three divisions: 3rd/4th Grade Division, 5th/6th Grade Division, and 7th/8th Grade Division. All teams are coached by 44 dedicated parent volunteers, who often come back year after year and enjoy working with the girls to improve their skills and help them grow with the program.

As League President, I have brought attention to the program. The Fort Lee business community has become more involved by sponsoring teams. The sponsor’s names are proudly displayed on the back of each team member’s uniform shirt. Opening Day is now a huge event where the league, including families, sponsors, and town dignitaries are invited to attend. After the introduction of teams and coaches, historically, longtime friend and Fort Lee Mayor, Mark Sokolich, has tossed up the opening tip to begin the season. Special give-aways have also produced enthusiasm for the League. Car magnets, water bottles, and backpacks have been given to each participant. Coaches have received special coach’s shirts and personalized fleeces, as well as duffle bags. With help, I have also started a website, fortleegirlsbasketball.com, which is constantly updated with scores, schedules, photos, rosters, and other pertinent information throughout the season.

This year I am reinstating the traveling All-Star Team at the 7th & 8th grade level. The team will be competing against other towns in preparation for high school. This program is a direct feeder to the high school program. I work in conjunction with the girls’ varsity basketball coach monitoring upcoming athletes.

Interested girls are given several opportunities to register for the league. All girls are placed on a team through the draft system. Practices start the first week in December. Games begin the first week in January and are held weekly. All teams practice at least once a week.

The season ends the second week in March, followed by playoffs and championship games. What has become known as “Championship Saturday” has grown to a packed gym with standing room only. Closing ceremonies follow, which include trophy presentations.

I am always asked what motivates me to volunteer my time, especially when my daughters have already graduated from the program. My response is simple, I enjoy giving back to the community where I grew up, played sports, and went to school. I played in the recreation program beginning from my years at School #1 and the middle school, followed by sports at Fort Lee High School.

Opening Night Ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011. Please check the website for details. See you on the Court!
